From the book Muslimah Mukallaf: The Muslimah’s Guide to Puberty, Faith, and Personal Care
As Muslim women, caring for our bodies is part of our deen. The Sunnah teaches us to be clean, intentional, and mindful about what we use — and sometimes, the most beneficial products are the simplest and most natural ones.
In my book, Muslimah Mukallaf: The Muslimah’s Guide to Puberty, Faith, and Personal Care, I share safe, natural alternatives for everyday Feminine care that work in harmony with our faith and our health. Today, I’m giving you a sneak peek at three of my favorites.
1. Cloth Pads – A Chemical-Free Period Care Option
If you want to avoid synthetic chemicals and disposable waste, cloth menstrual pads are a great choice.
Benefits of cloth pads:
Made from soft cotton, which is gentler for sensitive skin
Leak-proof outer layer for confidence during your period
Reusable for years when cared for properly
Available in different sizes for light to heavy flow
To use, simply change them every 3–4 hours like a disposable pad, then wash and dry them for reuse. While they can feel slightly bulkier than disposable pads, many women find the comfort and health benefits worth it.

2. Black Musk – A Sunnah for Post-Menstruation Purification
Black musk is a beautiful Sunnah practice that not only provides natural fragrance but also helps prevent infections in the private area.
How to use black musk:
After performing ghusl, take a cotton swab.
Add a single drop of pure black musk (not diluted with chemicals).
Gently wipe around the lips of the private area and at the entrance where menstrual blood exits.
Pure black musk works as a natural antibacterial and perfume. This practice is based on a narration from ʿAisha (RA), who explained how the Prophet ﷺ advised women to use musk after menstruation for cleanliness.

3. Tea Tree Oil – A Natural Acne Spot Treatment
For natural skincare, diluted tea tree oil is an effective way to treat pimples.
Directions:
Mix 1 drop of tea tree oil with Vaseline, olive oil, or coconut oil.
Gently apply to the pimple to help draw out bacteria.
By the end of the day, you may notice the spot reduced or gone.
⚠️ Important: Never apply undiluted tea tree oil directly to the skin, as it can cause irritation or burns.

Why Natural Alternatives Matter in Islam
Choosing natural alternatives isn’t just about going “green” — it’s about caring for the body Allah entrusted to us. The Sunnah encourages us to avoid harmful substances and maintain purity, making these natural options both spiritually and physically beneficial.
